Title: The Informatics of 21st Century Healthcare
Abstract:
Forces are at work in the environment that will radically alter healthcare delivery in the 21st Century. These include an explosion of molecular data about human health and disease resulting from the Human Genome Project and high throughput measurement methods, an awareness that current healthcare systems have unacceptable rates of process errors, and the engagement of patients in shared decision making using bidirectional Internet-based applications such as patient portals. This keynote will trace some of the major trends that will drive the emergence of systems approaches to effective information and knowledge management that will transform healthcare from a "trillion dollar cottage industry" into a safer and more effective endeavor.
